Your Building May Be Safe, But Are Your
Computers?
continued
from page 1Don't be lulled into thinking that because
your computers are new, the operating system is up to date. Plan to check weekly for new
releases and implement them as soon as possible. Also, don't believe that you don't need
to worry if you use non-Microsoft software; all software has the potential to be hacked.
Message Filtering: The ubiquitous use of
email has made it a very useful way to spread viruses quickly and in large numbers. E-mail
viruses often interrupt service even to "safe" mail servers simply because the
volume of incoming contaminated e-mail overloads the server. One way to avoid this is by
deploying a message filtering solution.
Message filtering involves blocking messages (or their attachments)
from ever entering your network. Rules are established to block mail from certain domains,
delete attachments containing certain, potentially harmful file types and restrict the
size of messages being delivered. A message filtering solution can also be helpful in
containing the inevitable virus outbreaks by restricting outbound messages when suspicious
activity occurs.
Anti-Virus:
For many people, anti-virus software is the only defense against intrusion. Anti-virus
software is a good start, but it is not enough to protect your systems. At best, it can
only defend against known viruses. It can do little to stop unknown viruses and even less
to stop more directed attacks against your network. Since new viruses are developed and
spread every day, your anti-virus software is only as good as the last update.
There are some steps you can take to make your anti-virus software
more effective. First, update your virus definition files daily. In many cases, there will
be nothing new to update, but by performing a daily update, you can be assured that you
will always have the best protection. Second, make sure that your anti-virus software is
scanning all of the files on your computer. Most of the time, it is set by default to scan
only system files, so it is important to change this to "scan all files." The
scan will take longer, but the results will be more accurate. Finally, enable the
"heuristics" capabilities of your software. This will allow your software a
fighting chance at identifying unknown viruses.
Backup: No
matter how secure your network, something bad will happen sooner or later. When things go
really wrong, the only way to get back to normal is to restore from a backup made when
everything was working properly. Therefore, be sure to back up your data files daily and
back up your system files whenever new software is installed. Keep copies of your backup
at a secure, off-site location.
The security of your technology resources is important. By
reviewing your security plans for each of the above areas, you can be confident that your
systems can handle just about anything that might come along.
